FShamakhi or Shamakhy is a rayon of Azerbaijan, and a town in the rayon. It is the historical center of the region of Shirvan. The town is 70 miles west of Baku. It has some 20,000 inhabitants, among them Azerbaijanis, Armenians and Russians. |

The ancient town Shamakhi is situated at 800 m. over the sea level height on the southern slopes of the Major Caucasus. Founded in the 6th century A.D., the city became the capital of the rulers of the influential and powerful principality of Shirvan.
